From Drillhole to Decision: Unlocking Orebody Knowledge with Downhole Logging
WSG was proud to see Carlie Byrne present at the recent AIG Perth Drilling and Geology Seminar, where she shared insights on how downhole logging can transform the way we understand and model orebodies.
Carlie’s presentation highlighted a persistent challenge in the industry: we simply aren’t logging enough of what we drill. With only a small percentage of drillholes logged, datasets are often sparse, coverage is limited, and valuable insights are missed. This gap can restrict our ability to fully interpret subsurface conditions and make confident decisions.
She demonstrated how wireline logging addresses this issue by generating continuous, in-situ datasets across the full length of the drillhole. This level of coverage provides deeper insight into rock structure, physical properties, and orebody geometry. By combining data from multiple geophysical tools, ambiguity is reduced and geological understanding significantly improved.
A key theme of the presentation was the role of geophysical interpretation in shaping robust mineral models. From raw measurements through to mineralogical insights, integrated datasets enable more accurate and reliable interpretations of the orebody.
Carlie also emphasised the value of data across the entire mining lifecycle. Information captured at the drilling stage flows through exploration, resource definition, production, and ultimately mine closure. The more comprehensive the dataset at the outset, the greater its value downstream—from lithological and structural insights during exploration, to mineralogy and orebody modelling in resource definition, grade control in production, and hydrogeology and stability considerations at closure.
Real-time data acquisition further enhances decision-making by allowing teams to optimise drilling programs as they progress. This reduces uncertainty and ensures every metre drilled delivers maximum value.
At WSG, we’re committed to helping clients turn drillhole data into faster, more confident decisions. Because better data doesn’t just improve models—it drives smarter drilling strategies and stronger outcomes across the entire mining value chain.
